Eine Vorab-Publikation \u00a0– oder auch Preprint \u00a0– ist eine Vorabversion einer wissenschaftlichen Arbeit, die \u00f6ffentlich zug\u00e4nglich gemacht wird. Es geht typischerweise einem formellen Peer Review und\/oder der Aufnahme in eine Zeitschrift voraus.<\/p>\n

Wenn man sich den Publikationszyklus ansieht, findet man Vorab-Publikationen in der Regel in der Feedbackphase vor dem formellen Peer-Review. In den meisten F\u00e4llen stellen Autoren ihre Arbeit fr\u00fchzeitig zur Verf\u00fcgung, um informelles Feedback von Kollegen zu erhalten, um sicherzustellen, dass das Papier zur Einreichung bereit ist, und um einen Vorrang f\u00fcr Forschungsergebnisse zu schaffen. COVID-19\u2019s Impact on Preprints<\/h4>\n

As the world raced to share insights and provide therapies related to Covid-19, the result was a rapid increase in submissions to preprint servers and access to those preprints, which ultimately created a shift in how researchers are now publishing and interacting with preprints.<\/p>\n

Right now, about half of all pandemic research is being\u00a0published to preprints servers first<\/a>.\u00a0 Comparatively, this marks a significant shift from previous outbreaks of Ebola and Zika,\u00a0where\u00a0only 5 percent of research was published as a preprint<\/a>.\u00a0 During the SARS pandemic, 93 percent of research was published after the epidemic had ended. The shift during COVID is understandable given that research was needed in real time so researchers could get a vaccine created as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n

Why are Preprints Used? What Our Research Shows<\/h6>\n

A lot of literature focuses on the pros and cons of preprints for authors and publishers, but there is little information about what preprints mean for researchers, especially in the commercial space. We gathered feedback from corporate R&D intensive organizations to determine how preprints are being used.<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Monitor how products are being used in the market<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Access science that may never be published in a traditional journal<\/p>\n

Has Covid-19 Changed Perceptions Around Preprints?<\/h6>\n

There\u00a0are challenges when it comes to discerning the quality of non-peer reviewed\u00a0information, as well as the\u00a0ambiguity around copyright for commercial organizations.\u00a0At the end of the day,\u00a0there is\u00a0overwhelming\u00a0consensus\u00a0that the\u00a0final published\u00a0article\u00a0in a peer reviewed journal is\u00a0preferred and should replace the preprint\u00a0version.\u00a0But, when speaking with researchers,\u00a0we learned\u00a0preprints can\u00a0still\u00a0play a significant role in early phase explorations.<\/p>\n

Here are a few key takeaways from our conversations:<\/p>\n

\u201cMost literature search results I compile specifically exclude preprints since they are not yet peer-reviewed. However, I do provide a weekly update to support our COVID-19 Task Force and that one lists pre-prints because that body of literature is so dynamic.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cOur thinking on pre-prints is evolving during the COVID crisis.\u00a0 Science is\u00a0accelerating,\u00a0and we are finding that we need to pay more attention to articles that are being deposited in repositories ahead of publication.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes I need hard facts, other times it is useful just to find ideas and inspiration, and that can come from anywhere.
